Our Shared Animating Purpose

Breadchain Cooperative is empowering the struggle for a progressive and equitable future. We see that the political left is starting to actualize the value of blockchains and cryptocurrencies as radical and liberating tools that can be added to the toolsets of any political collective. We want to build an infrastructure of funding mechanisms, toolkits, and networks of support that our comrades can plug into. Breadchain is assembling a foundation on which post-capitalist projects can build, sustain, endure, and win the fight for a fair and just society.

The ultimate challenge we are faced with, is how to both exist within a capitalist system we don’t agree with, while fighting against it for building towards post-capitalism. This means finding sustainable solutions for aligned persons so they can commit themselves to pro-social endeavors in the long term rather than just in short bursts until resources are used up or people burn out. Crypto tools provide an opening in the economic design space for organizations to develop economic systems with pro-social values embedded in them. Given the centralizing tendencies of techno-capitalism, there is an inescapable necessity to build decentralized alternative technical infrastructures. The left needs its own digital and economic infrastructure that transcends the trap of either venture capital or charity funding dependency, to create collective solidaristic relationships embedded in smart contracts.

In order to forge this future into reality we know that by working together we can go farther. Breadchain Cooperative is therefore a mutual aid organization and federation of projects with the purpose of exploring the radical potentials of distributed ledger technologies like blockchains.

Guiding Principles

Our guiding principles are the major pillars and values we stand by that help inform the direction in which we want to proceed. Projects and members of the cooperative should adhere to and believe in these principles. Failure to adhere to the guiding principles may lead to removal from the cooperative.

I: Economic Democracy

We strive for an economy in which resources are allocated democratically rather than through market forces or corporate and government manipulation.

II: Mutual Aid

We believe in communal solidarity through reciprocal exchange for mutual benefit so everyone can live a dignified life.

III: Transparent Governance

Everyone should be able to have a say and those given power by the community must be accountable for their decisions.

VI: Dual Power

We must both combat existing institutions and build parallel grassroots alternatives using the tools we have because technology without direct social intervention only favors those in power.

Core objectives

Our core objectives help inform what the cooperative’s priorities conform to the guiding principles. Core objectives should be reviewed and revised on a regular basis by the representative of each member project as the priorities will change as the project develops. Our current core objectives are:

  • Support the building of technical tools and literacy for leftist projects

  • Provide financial sustainability for leftist teams to help them endure insatiable capitalism

  • Build a coalition among leftist projects for advising, skill-sharing, and cross-promotion
